Do you love Italian food but need to find a way to burn off those carbs ASAP? Here’s your chance.
Mangia Hoboken, a food and cultural tour, takes up to 16 guests per tour around Hoboken year-round to get a behind-the-scenes look at the bustling city while they explore authentic food businesses in the area.
Tour-goers will visit Carlo’s City Bake Shop, home of “Cake Boss,” Lisa’s Italian Deli, named best Italian deli by NJ Monthly Magazine, Zagat-rated Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria, Empire Coffee & Tea and more.
Another one of toue-goers stops will be Antique Bakery, which has a coal-fired brick oven that has been in use since 1938. Primarily a wholesale bread bakery, owner Ivan bakes about 2500 hand-made loaves every day seven days a week. Varieties include whole wheat, semolina, ciobatta, focaccia and panella.
They will also stop at Fiore’s, which was opened in 1913 and purchased by current owner, John Amato Sr. in 1965. Fiore’s famous “Roast Beef & Mozz” was given the Best Hero award by the Village Voice. John and his son, John Jr., typically make about 160 pounds of fresh mozzarella daily.
The tour, which lasts about three and a half hours, cost $48 per person which includes all food samples. Tours leave every Saturday at 2 p.m. from the main entrance of the Hoboken PATH station, which is at the corner of River St. and Hudson Pl. During the winter months, tours are given every other Saturday. If there is sufficient demand, a 1:30 p.m. tour will also be given.
